Okay, you’ve done the exercises over and over again… so what’s next? Well, do them AGAIN! :D

But before you close this window, please check out this video on alternate picking and learn some things from it first! Play hard!

Try this Paul Gilbert style lick!

As usual, alternate pick all the notes strictly and work up to speed!

Hope you’re slowly learning the scales I included in the previous post.

Right now, I’m going to introduce you to “alternate picking”, which as the name suggests, is simply picking each note in a down-up-down-up motion, or vice versa. My best advice to you would be to start REALLY SLOW, with a metronome (it’s a MUST) at about 60bpm and focus on only moving your wrist when picking the downstrokes and upstrokes.

I know this is going to be boring (#*!&), but reserve some practice time dedicated to mastering this, as the results will show itself over time.

Playing chromatic runs is a good starting point…. start off on the 1st string (high e)
e-1-2-3-4-2-3-4-5-3-4-5-6——

and slowly work your way up to the 12th fret. From there….

e-15-14-13-12-14-13-12-11-13-12-11-10—

Do the reverse and go back down to fret 1.

Repeat this sequence on the other strings to get used to the feel of it…

And you’ll be able to alternate pick in no time! Good luck!
